The payment was said to be compulsory and if one did not pay, a follow-up visit was threatened until the money was paid. Notable victims of the campaign were Chitindi Arther*, Martin Chimweta*. 14-15 April Freedom of It was reported that between 10-15 April, villagers in Chipinge East at Mandera village under village head assembly and Chikunya were forced to contribute $2 per household towards the Independence Day celebrations. The association people who were leading this operation were the Zanu PF ward chairperson Mr Moyana and war veteran John Maphosa. The two were also responsible for noting those who have contributed. All those who did not comply with this directive were said to have been threatened with unspecified action. 16 April Freedom of It was reported that people in Jinga, Hapare and Nechitima villages in ward 3 of Chimanimani West were assembly and forced to contribute $1 per head towards the Independence celebrations, which were later held at association Chiseyama primary school. The ward 3 councillor Lovemore Musweweshiri spearheaded this campaign. He is alleged to have threatened those who would have failed to pay by removing them from the list of beneficiaries of government programmes such as the social welfare food programme and school 16
