CCC CANDIDATES ELECTION
PROCESS ANALYSIS
The CCC par ty employed a community
consensus candidate selection model in place of
internal primary elections. The process has not
been as smooth as had been anticipated by
party officials as the selection process was
disrupted at some centres due to clashes among
candidates. Violence was witnessed in
Glenview, Kuwadzana, Warren Park, Glenview
South, Glen Norah, Epworth North and in
Zengeza West constituencies in Harare
province.
The CCC nomination process degenerated into
chaotic scenes of violence and disruption in
some constituencies amid fears of imposition of
candidates, although the party said that the
situation was under control. There were
allegations that some incumbent councillors
and Members of Parliament had doled out
money to communities so they could be
nominated. Some acts of violence in some
constituencies forced CCC to order reruns of the
process.
In Harare’s Warren Park, the incumbent MP
Shakespeare Hamauswa, drove off with
members of the panel that were supposed to
have oversight over the process after insults
were exchanged by contending groups. Other
members of the party who were vying for the
post of MP, Pride Mkono, Kudzai Kadzere and
Paddington Japajapa claimed that their support
15
base was missing from the street point person
registers that were compiled at the rebranding
of CCC from MDC Alliance.
In Glen Norah, vocal party youth Womberaiishe
Nhende was assaulted by a group of thugs
aligned to former Harare mayor Herbert
Gomba. In Dzivarasekwa, there were reports
that the process failed to kick off due to logistical
problems. In Harare Central, supporters of
Gladys Hlatywayo clashed with those of
incumbent MP Murisi Zwizwai.
Despite widespread videos of these chaotic
scenes, there were other areas where the
process proceeded fairly well. Zanu PF’s
Mashonaland West Province Secretary for
Education repor tedly declared that no
opposition party would conduct business in the
province, days after stopping CCC consensus
candidate selection process in Goromonzi
North’s Ward 16.
