It is regarded a crime to belong to any political party other than Zanu PF. Many people are forced to join the party to benefit from government aid. Section 56 of the Constitution states that every Zimbabwean has the right not to be treated in an unfair and discriminatory manner on such grounds as their nationality, race, colour, tribe, language, class or political affiliation among others. According to Article 2 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR), the right to equal treatment requires that all persons be treated equally before the law, without discrimination.
