Masvingo
In Masvingo province, cases of violation of political rights as well as the
people’s right to personal security continued being recorded during the
month of August 2022 with the political environment heating up. The
opposition CCC members were on the receiving end of the majority of
violations recorded during the month under review. This was noted in
Gutu West in a case where about 20 to 25 Zanu PF youths allegedly
toy-toyed around the homesteads of the CCC members with the aim of
instilling fear in them. They blocked entrances to homesteads of
targeted individuals for close to 1 hour 30 minutes, singing and dancing,
chanting slogans such as ‘mupanduki chera mwena nguva yakwana’
loosely translated means ‘sellouts, dig holes and hide the time has come.’
Some of the identified youths included Jotham Chamba, Timoth
Maramba, Tafadzwa Maramba, Patson Makumbe, Nokhthula Shumba,
Kudakwashe Mahachi, Nyasha Mahachi and Vengai Hungwe. The CCC
members are now living in fear for their lives as the Zanu PF youths used
insulting slogans and threats. On 23 August 2022 a police report was
reportedly made at ZRP Gutu. The victims were identified as Ephraim
Morudo CCC district vice chairperson for Gutu West, Joseph Munyikwa
CCC shadow councilor ward 7 and Cuthbert Manzvanda. The incidents
happened in broad daylight and the police allegedly did not act in any
way.
