Right to Personal Security
ZPP recorded 14 cases related to the violation of the right to personal security. Manicaland recorded 4 cases, being
the highest number and Harare and Mashonaland Central had 2 cases each.
A case was received of the sad passing on of Grace Koso from Nyanga North ward 5 on Mach 9. It is alleged that she
was assaulted using the butt of a gun by Zimbabwe National Army (ZNA) soldiers who are aligned to Chido Sanyatwe
the sitting MP (Zanu PF) for Nyanga North. She was assaulted on 24 March 2023 after skirmishes between Chido
Sanyatwe and Evans Kamombo, both of Zanu PF. Koso was part of the Evans Kamombo faction. Another case on the
right to personal security was reported on 16 March in Shamva North at Madziva mine secondary school. 8 students
were brutally assaulted by police officers at ZRP Madziva mine base after they were caught stealing maize cobs from
the school fields. Reports indicate that the students sustained broken arms following the assault. With the help of
legislator Bramwell Bushu the victims received medical assistance from Doctor Kamuriwo. The incident reportedly
left parents and school authorities worried by the conduct of the police.
Section 52 of the Constitution states that every Zimbabwean has the right to bodily and psychological integrity,
which includes the right to freedom from all forms of violence from public or private sources. Articles 3 and 5 of the
UDHR recognise that every person has the right to personal liberty and security, and this is supported by Article 6 of
the ACHPR.
