ZPP also joined the rest of the world in celebrating the UN International Day for the Right to the Truth concerning
Gross Human Rights Violations and for the Dignity of Victims which is celebrated annually on the 24th of March. The
purpose of the day is to honour the memory of victims of serious and systematic human rights violations and the
importance of the right to truth and justice. It’s also meant to be a tribute to those who have dedicated their lives to
the fight of promoting and protecting human rights and to those who have lost their lives in these efforts. Section
251 of the Constitution established the National Peace and Reconciliation Commission [NPRC]. According to Section
253 of the Constitution some of the functions of NPRC include ensuring post-conflict justice, healing and
reconciliation and developing programmes for victims of persecution, torture and other forms of abuse so that they
receive rehabilitative treatment and support. All this with the aim of bringing about national reconciliation by
encouraging people to tell the truth about the past and facilitating the making of amends and the provision of
justice. ZPP continues to advocate for the NPRC to fulfil its constitutional mandate in promoting healing and
reconciliation in the country and bringing closure for victims of human rights violations.
ZPP joined the human rights, democracy and governance fraternity in remembering the disappearance of Itai
Dzamara. It has been 8 years since the journalist and pro-democracy activist went missing and authorities have yet
to give a report on his whereabouts. Itai’s family and friends require truth and justice for their missing relative.
Since his disappearance on March 9 2015, no meaningful investigation has taken place and his whereabouts remain
unknown. Dzamara was abducted by five men while he was at a barber shop in Harare's Glen View suburb. His
abductors are said to have accused him of stealing cattle before handcuffing him, forcing him into a white truck
with concealed number plates, and driving off. Prior to his abduction, he had called for the late former President
Robert Mugabe to step down. We continue to call upon the government to investigate the disappearance of Dzamara
in order to bring truth, justice and closure to his family and friends.
