Provincial Summaries Bulawayo Food violations were the most commonly recorded violations and other civi and political rights were violated during the course of this month. The province also witnessed interparty conflict and intolerance. Date HR Violated Provincial highlights 18 December Freedom of Expression At the Bulawayo city centre Charity Gumbo, a Zapu supporter, is alleged to have threatened to assault *Nomakhosi Tshabangu of Zanu PF. Gumbo blamed Tshabangu’s party for bringing the country to its knees when they got into a heated argument after Tshabangu said Bulawayo was better off than Harare in terms of cash shortages. Harare People continued to face severe cash shortages with long bank queues despite introduction of the bond notes. Pensioners seemed to be the most affected as they had gone for up to three months without accessing their cash. Violations recorded included cases of discrimination, right to food, right to health and freedom of movement. Date HR Violated Provincial highlights 2 December Right to Education 4 December Right to Shelter 12 December Freedom of Movement Several pupils failed to collect their grade seven results at Zengeza Primary School in Zengeza West after school authorities demanded that they first clear outstanding school fees. Parents, who are bearing the brunt of the cash crisis, felt this would make it difficult for their children to proceed to form one. Other parents felt discriminated against when it was alleged that MDC-T member Mr Job Sikala, who also owed fees to the school, managed to get his daughter’s results. An MDC-T ward chairperson Jonathan Barindate who was one of the MDC-T activists who illegally took over land at Gurundoro New Stands at St Mary’s in ward 5 and allocated stands to various people has run away after defrauding several people of their money. Over one thousand stands were illegally given to people. Barindate sold an undisclosed number of stands at $100 each to various people before he disappeared with the cash. The complainants are finding it difficult to report to the police as they are told council did not give the stands. This renders them illegal occupants. A woman identified as *Mrs Chifamba was physically harassed by Zanu PF youths when she attempted to take photos of houses that were destroyed by rain in ward 8 at Guardiner’s plots.
